We use our tongue to taste food. The tongue is covered with taste buds. Taste buds help us to identify different taste. When the taste buds come into contact with certain food, they send a message to the brain through the nerves. Then the brain identifies the taste.
There are four main types of taste buds on the surface of the tongue. They are spread out on the tongue to differentiate tastes such as sweet, bitter, sour and salty.
Babies have excellent and sensitive taste buds whereas grown-ups have less sensitive taste buds. That is why it is difficult to make children take medicine. Grown-ups find it easier to take bitter medicine compared to children.
